Why Deterministic Engineering Calculations and LLM Reasoning Should Coexist in Drilling

Applying LLMs to drilling does not mean replacing hydraulics, torque-and-drag, survey calculations, or statistical models with generated answers. A stronger architecture assigns each problem to the method best suited to it: sensors provide measurements, deterministic tools calculate physics, statistical models quantify uncertainty, retrieval systems locate relevant evidence, and the LLM integrates and explains those results. This article examines why that separation matters and how it reduces hallucination risk while making engineering AI more useful.
